100 Years Ago, February 15, 1908

WILLIAM Hill, a 22-year-old-labourer, appeared at Worcestershire Assizes charged with indecently assaulting a 12-year-old girl as she walked across a field at Tardebigge. Hill denied the charge, but was found guilty. He was supported in court by his local vicar, the Rev Roberts, and Mr Margesson, secretary to Lord Plymouth. Both said Hill was a hard working, honest and moral lad. The judge declared had it not been for the good people' who had spoken up for him he would have been forced to send him to jail. As it was he would be bound over.  more...

50 Years Ago, February 15, 1958

BROMSGROVE'S annual Brewster (licensing) Sessions were held at the town's police court. It was revealed that last year there had been 12 convictions for drunkenness and one for drink driving. Two 18-year-olds had been convicted of purchasing drink for people under age. All those convicted had been men. Bromsgrove, with a population of 42,715, had 64 licensed premises, which equated on average to one establishment for every 667 inhabitants.  more...

25 Years Ago, February 11, 1983

TWENTY firemen battled for hours to contain an early morning blaze which swept through the Dog and Pheasant pub in Worcester Road, Bromsgrove. Traffic was diverted from the town centre at the height of the blaze. The bar was extensively damaged, but prompt action by firemen save the rest of the building. Last July the pub had undergone a £70,000 refurbishment.  more...

100 Years Ago February 8, 1908 THE members of Evesham Rowing Club do not mean to rest upon the laurels gained by their famous junior crew last season but are doing their best to still further enhance the reputation of the club by a successful season this year. A senior crew, including three of the men who rowed last year, is already on the water and a new first-class boat, built by Sims, of Putney, the builder of the Oxford and Cambridge boats, has been purchased. This is a most workmanlike looking craft and carries the crew admirably. The men have only been out in her two or three times, but already they sit her well and if they keep fit they will make a good show for the town plate, which is to be revived this year on Whit Monday.  more...

Flood awards

WORKERS who helped Droitwich Spa clean up after the floods are set to be recognised at an award ceremony. Devoted Focsa Services staff are being honoured at the ceremony today (Thursday, February 7). The ceremony will be hosted by Wychavon District Council. Sharon Casswell, client services manager, said: "We get an excellent service from Focsa and these awards will recognise the hard work of its staff and in particular those with long service or who have gone the extra mile." Focsa holds the contract for the waste collection and street cleansing service on behalf of Wychavon and has just won the contract to provide the new alternate weekly collection service when it starts later this year.  more...

The president opened the meeting wishing everyone a good New Year and she pointed out many of the exciting Salwarpe WI activities arranged for the next 12 months. These include our birthday lunch to the Chateau Impney in February and summer outings to a vineyard in Herefordshire and Denman College. She encouraged members to participate in the spring food and craft rally in April and confirmed that Salwarpe WI will be holding the Corbett Group Meeting in October. IN stark contrast to a dreary Monday outside, the air was filled with fun, frivolity - and balloons - as Probus '87 celebrated the 21st anniversary of its formation at the Raven Hotel. Richard Morris, the mayor of Droitwich, and the mayoress, along with chairman Keith Garvey and his wife Peggy, were among the many guests who had flocked far and wide to join members of the club in a sumptuous five course meal, which also included the presentation of badges to seven founder members. In a symbolic link between past and present, Eric Davis, himself a founder member and chairman in 1991-93, is shown cutting the cake. Bubbly was followed by entertainment from baritone Allan Astley-Morton and soprano Natalie Pinfield-Williams - granddaughter of an eminent past member. May Probus '87 continue to prosper.  more...
