WORCESTER ANGLO-HELENIC CLUB

At the first meeting of 2008, about 25 members and guests enjoyed an entertaining evening as co-founder Peter Reynolds presented an illustrated travelogue of his recent trek based in Paleochora, South West Crete. Located on a small peninsula, some 75kms south of the old Venetian town of Chania, Paleochora has been a popular village of 2000 inhabitants for many years, due to its location, climate, good beaches and access to other villages along the coast by ferry and bus. Peter described a series of varied day walks of 15kms - 20kms. The next meeting of the club is on Thursday, at the Worcester Golf and Country Club, Bransford Road, Worcester. The theme is Travels on Leros. Anyone wishing to come along and enjoy a sample of the Greek life will be made welcome. CALLOW END WI

The speaker for the evening was Chris Cooke accompanied by his wife Melanie. Mr Cooke took us through a brief history oo corn dollies. He became interested after a visit to Avoncroft 30 years ago. He said the tall wheat Maris Widgeon was grown specifically for the thatching of roofs. It was common practice for the thatcher to put a corn sculptor on top of the roof when he had finished and another when he had been paid. The goddess of corn was known as Ceres by the Romans and a corn dolly was supposed to contain her spirit. It was thought she would die when the corn was harvested unless some was saved.  more...

STAFF at two garden centres are getting together for a charity football match at Bromsgrove Rovers Football Club. The match between Webbs of Wychbold and Barnet Hill will kick off at 7.45pm on Tuesday, March 11. The players will be raising sponsorship money and asking for donations on the gate for the Greenfingers charity, which aims to create and improve gardens in children's hospices throughout the UK. LAST Saturday, Bridge Builders and Distinctive met at the Vicarage and enjoyed playing with their new parachute, recently acquired from funding received from Worcester County Council with the help of Councillor Tom Wells. Great fun was had by all, playing Cat and Mouse, Sharks and one team trying to keep the ball on the parachute whilst the other team tried to knock it off. An excellent game for team building as the young people worked together, adopting various strategies to try to beat the other team or person. Also, it was a great source of exercise out in the open air.  more...
