SIR - As I warned last summer , and was criticised by Philip Bushill-Mattthews MEP for so doing, the EU Environment Commissioner has now admitted the EU did not foresee the problems caused by its policy to get 10 per cent of Europe's road fuel needs from biofuel. The rush to biofuel has meant that food prices are rising dramatically and there have been food riots in several Third World countries because the price of basic food stuffs such as wheat, soya, corn, have been priced out of their reach. Simultaneously, the destruction of the rain forest has gained pace to allow the growing of palm oil. The EU Commissioner has now said it would be better to miss the biofuel targets than achieve it by continuing to harm the hungry and poor or damage the environment.  more...

THREE Bromsgrove fundraisers are holding a night of whisky tasting to raise money to fund research into multiple sclerosis. Jackie, Anthony and Yvonne, who are otherwise known as JAYS, are offering the chance to sample a selection of malt whisky at a special evening at the DDS and S club, in Stourbridge Road, Bromsgrove. The event will be held on Friday, January 25. The evening begins at 8pm and tickets cost £20, including five different whiskies, each a double measure, and nibbles. FOLLOWING the Christmas break, there was a real buzz of camaraderie, as members gathered in the village hall for the January meeting. Our new president, Barbara Savage, was delighted to see so many members present, including two visitors and extended a warm welcome to them all, and at the same time, thanked Beattie Denning for the lovely flowers. In her report, she told the members about interesting events outlined in the brand new Worcestershire WI News, including the county quiz, the AGM at Liverpool and Walking the Worcestershire Way. It was also noted that Pearl Prior, together with Wendy Beddows, would be launching a craft afternoon regarding the spring rally party theme exhibits.
