SIR - I was shocked and absolutely astounded when I read Wendy Hands' contribution, (Letters, August 27), which suggested that because Worcestershire County Council is contemplating ending subsidised bus passes from some children aged sixteen to nineteen they should also cease providing subsidised free travel for pensioners over 60. Surely walking is healthy exercise for young people and should be encouraged.  more...

SIR - All the nurses at Worcestershire Royal Hospital are absolute angels. They walk so briskly from job to job they almost run. The doctors I've met are all excellent, though terribly pushed for time. The porters all do a lot of leg-work, up and down long corridors all day long, pushing patients and trolleys. The back-up staff, the kitchen staff and cleaners are all friendly, but under great pressure.  more...

A SMALL exhibition of flowers, fruit, and vegetables was held at Finstall Village Hall for the occasion of the third annual gathering of the Finstall Society. Among the exhibits were a fine display of stove and greenhouse plants, a beautiful double petunia and a curious looking cactus. A LARGE congregation was present at St John's Church for a patronal festival service during which the new pipe organ, installed the previous week, was played for the first time. A DROITWICH man was rushed home from Nice a fortnight after starting a holiday there. Mr John Christopher Bourne, of North Street, was operated on at Worcester Royal Infirmary. According to John's sister, Mrs Deaken, a doctor had sanctioned the trip as he thought it would do him 'the world of good.' However, Mrs Deaken, said they had not seen much of the Cote D'Azur as we were at the hospital everyday'.  more...

Bob joined a circus aged 27 and met his wife, who was an acrobat. They toured the country with stars like Max Wall and later toured the world, including Vietnam. A NEW baby and toddler group is being launched in Bromsgrove. Youngsters will be able to play, dress up, run around and get messy with crafts while making new friends at the group, which will be held each Friday from 10-11.30am during term-time. The group, called Little Wonders, will be held at Bromsgrove Baptist Church, in New Road, from Friday, September 14, and is open to anyone with a child under school-age or expectant mums who want to meet other families. DRINKERS will be raising a toast during a top village beer festival. Belbroughton Beer Festival takes place this Saturday (September 8)with a marquee and bar open from1 to11pm at the school fields, at Belbroughton Primary School, in Bradford Lane. There will be 25 barrels of real ale and cider and a pig roast and barbecue from mid afternoon. Live TV will feature the rugby world cup and there will bemusic from The Don O'Lee Duo Irish band.
