My nomination

I HAVE just read the letter headed Dirt tracks' (Your Letters, August 17). Yes, I agree, Abbey Road does have a bad surface but my nomination for worst stretch of road has to be Hanley Road. The stretch from the junction with Green Lane up to the junction with Wells Road must take some beating. You spend most of your time trying to avoid the lumps of ironwork stuck up in places, and the awful uneven surface. My poor little older car is getting shaken to bits, as I use this stretch of road often. Then we get onto the Wyche Road, once again ironwork stuck up in places and holes.  more...

Warning sign?

I READ with interest the letter by Mr D McCarry headed Dirt tracks' (Your Letters, August 17). I and other residents of West Malvern Road have reported on numerous occasions over a period of time, the breaking up of the road surface, producing pot holes, and stones being thrown about by passing traffic into the path of pedestrians and young children walking on the adjoining pavement. However, the last few days has seen white marker paint put down only, I must say, on certain areas of the breaking surface. Is this to warn us away or we wait in anticipation as to what, or not, might happen?  more...

Memory Lane

100 Years Ago, August 31, 1907

THE ruling Board of Guardians at Bromsgrove Workhouse were opposed to the idea that the education of pauper children, despite its spiralling cost, should be financed from the national exchequer. They said if they no longer paid for the service from the locally collected Poor Rate, they would lose all control. They concluded such a move would create a huge bureau and be unworkable.' SUMMER had finally arrived after weeks of indifferent weather. The Messenger noted that the sun had come too late for any real hot weather, but it was being welcomed by farmers and growers in the Bromsgrove and Droitwich areas. The summer storms and gales had flattened acres of cereal crops making it impossible to harvest them by mechanical means. Farmers would have to resort to using the old fashioned sickle. And at last the remnants of the earlier sodden hay crop could be now be gathered from the fields.  more...

Echoes from the past

100 years ago MR E Trigg, Unicorn Hotel, had the misfortune to lose a very valuable mare on Monday last, as a result of an accident. His char-a-banc, drawn by four animals, was proceeding on the weekly journey to Eastnor and Ledbury and was going down the hill past British Camp. When near the top gate leading to Eastnor Park, the animal in question stumbled and fell. A motor-car was coming on behind at the time and ran into the mare, killing her almost instantly. The car and its occupants were knocked into the hedge at the side of the road, but fortunately no-one was hurt. Malvern Gazette, August 23, 1907 THE monthly meeting of the managers of the Ledbury Council Schools was held on Wednesday. Mr Perry, one of the visiting committee, gave the returns of the attendances of the scholars at the various schools. The average percentage during the past month in the Boys' school was 89, Girls' school 85 and infants 76. It was stated that the drop in percentage was caused to some extent by an outbreak of measles. Mr Mills, the school attendance officer, said there was a great deal of truancy at the present time, and mentioned several cases where boys stayed away from school and got into mischief. The Board expressed determination to deal firmly with the problem and seven summonses were ordered in cases where repeated warnings had been ignored. Ledbury Free Press, August 27, 1907.  more...

Safe to play

WYCHAVON District Council is reassuring sporty residents that playing fields recently flooded are perfectly safe to use. Following speculation that some rugby and football pitches might require testing and possible decontamination before being used again, the council has sought clarification on the matter from the Health Protection Agency. Geoff Carpenter, environmental protection manager at Wychavon, said: "The dilution effect during the floods and the effect of sunlight and normal soil activity since, mean that there is no more risk to players than there was prior to the floods." He added: "Players should observe normal hygiene precautions appropriate to the risk - cover any cuts with waterproof plasters before playing, and thoroughly clean any cuts that happen on the pitch as soon as possible." The Health Protection Agency also confirmed that there were no concerns about chemical contamination of land as there was massive dilution of any pollutants. Anyone with further queries should contact the environmental services department on 01386 565015.   more...
