Shallots are easy to grow and delicious roasted with other vegetables or whole in casseroles. They need dry, sunny weather to ripen properly, but this month you should be able to lift the bulbs out carefully with a fork when the leaves turn yellow. If it's sunny, leave them on the soil to dry out, or set up a temporary support of netting or chicken wire tied to four posts above the soil and allow the air to circulate.  more...

100 years ago - August 3, 1907

ONE of the giant pipes measuring a yard in diameter carrying water from the Elan Valley in Wales to Birmingham burst at a spot known as the Old Quarry in Hagley which is topped by the landmark monument. The force of the water flowing down the hill cut deep ruts in the main road for a distance of a quarter of a mile. Morgan, a local turncock' man, was summoned to turn off the valves to isolate the damaged pipe prior to repair work being carried out.  more...

50 years ago - August 3, 1957

BROMSGROVE was bracing itself for the usual bank holiday traffic jams, the worst of which were by the fountain and the mouth of St John Street. However, many drivers fed up with the jams now sought to bypass the town by taking to the country lanes. A new idea from the AA this holiday was to employ a spotter plane based at Elmdon Airport and linked to police which would seek out the worst travel spots from the air.  more...
