DAVID Blunkett was guest of honour at a city college's speech day.
The former Home Secretary visited New College Worcester (NCW) in London Road - a residential school and college for blind and partially sighted students - and presented prizes to the 11 to 19-year-old students and shared his experiences of school life.
Mardy Smith, principal of the college, said Mr Blunkett met college staff and pupils as well as Mayor of Worcester Stephen Inman. She said: "He then presented all of our prizes to the students and gave a funny and inspiring speech before enjoying tea and cakes with all of the parents and students.
"We had a really excellent day. People have been telling me that this was the best speech day we've ever had. David was full of praise for the work that we do and the achievements of our students."
Mr Blunkett, who is himself blind, first met students from NCW at the campaign in London and accepted an invitation to visit the school in person.
The college recently celebrated an important step in its history when it was given independence from the RNIB, becoming an independent non-maintained special school. It also received an outstanding' Ofsted report and was awarded specialist special school status, enabling it to continuously improve the support for its students.
