Hidden costs

ON approaching the municipal tip recently in my company car, which is a Nissan Navara - technically I admit, a commercial vehicle - I was approached by one of the members of staff and told I couldn't dump my sons old mattress without a permit. Is irony lost?

AM I alone in seeing the irony in the police cones placed on top of double yellow lines in Upton High Street? Don't the double yellows already mean don't park here'? Have they become so ignored (both by drivers and by the local police) that they need the cones too? Sadly the answer is clearly yes - as illustrated by a sign in a local shop window which asks that when people park on the double yellows, could they turn off their engine to avoid gassing the staff!  more...

Memory Lane

Echoes from the Past

100 years ago THE lamentable accident which befell Mr W G Olpin, clerk at the Post Office, yesterday points once more to the absolute necessity for closing the path leading from the Promenade on the Belle Vue Terrace on to the main road facing Lyttelton House. The traffic there, at certain hours of the day, is considerable, and the possibility of accidents is rendered much greater in these days of rapid cycling and motoring. It is almost impossible for anyone descending the path to see vehicles or cyclists coming down the descent from the Worcestershire Road past the Promenade Gardens, and the wonder is that accidents are not of very frequent occurence at the spot. It would not occasion the slightest inconvenience if the path was closed, as there are entrances at each end of the terrace and steps leading therefrom opposite the Post Office. Malvern Gazette, July 5, 1907.  more...
