Wyre Forest Flashback

Reunion's mystery venue

THIS week's stroll down memory lane is provided by this photograph showing a reunion of Wyre Forest's first Girl Guides group. The picture was submitted by Jeanette Fortune, of Puxton Drive, Kidderminster, whose late grandmother, Clara Harris, is one of those shown in the back row, far right. Mrs Fortune, 52, who also served in the Guides, said: "My late grandmother gave this photo to me and was very proud of the fact she had been a member of the first Girl Guides pack in Kidderminster. "I've had it a long time but I've been going through them as I've been putting together a family tree. "It's not until you lose your relatives that you realise you have nobody to ask, because I lost my mother and father before my grandmother. She died about 10 years ago." Mrs Fortune added she believed the photo had been taken during the 1930s or 1940s but could not identify the location shown in the picture. She went on: "I would be pleased to hear from anyone who can give me further information regarding the date or place and any names." To contact Mrs Fortune call 01562 632633.  more...

Long before "politically correct" reporting was the norm, the Shuttle carried the following article: Mr George , a dwarf belonging to Wolverhampton, was charged with being drunk and disorderly on Saturday evening in the High Street. The arresting officer said that the man was very disorderly and said that he would rather be locked up than leave the street. The officer was obliged to pick him up and carry him to the police station (in those days next to the Town Hall.) The Chief Constable said that the defendant was "a little man, but he was a mischievous little beggar." The bench sent him to prison for 14 months with hard labour. The Great Western Railway was offering the following: "Every Friday during July, August and September: Limited Specially Conducted Tours to Killaloe (Co Clare) by the new short route via Fishguard." The offer included: "3rd Class return ticket, six days rail, road and river trips, hotel accommodation and meals etc."  more...
