Memory Lane

100 Years Ago, July 27, 1907

A LARGE number of prominent people gathered at Dodford, near Bromsgrove, for the laying of the foundation stone for the village's new church. It was carried out by the Hon and Very Rev J Leigh, Dean of Hereford, who had been a former assistant curate at Bromsgrove. He laid the stone with a silver trowel crafted by the Bromsgrove Guild. The builder, John Brazier, was presented with a mallet. The church tower was being constructed thanks to a £600 gift from Mr Thomas White, who had generously financed the building of the tower at All Saints' Church in the town. However, £480 still had to be found to pay for Dodford's tower, a figure way beyond the reach of the mainly poor parishioners to afford. The Rev W Whinfield, to whom the building of the church was largely due, stated it would be built of Dodford brick and Bromsgrove stone.' n MEMBERS of the Droitwich and District Licensed Victuallers Association enjoyed their annual outing, which this year was to Evesham and Pershore. The 30-strong party journeyed in Mr Mead's four-in-hand char-a-banc. Fortunately, recent rain had laid the dust on the roads ensuring a more pleasant journey. After a capital lunch at a hotel in Evesham, the party chartered a steamer and enjoyed a trip on the Avon. A stop was made at Pershore on their return to view the abbey and the spa was reached at 10pm after what was said to be a jolly' outing.  more...

50 Years Ago, July 27, 1957

A RIDE on a seaside big dipper did what doctors at Bromsgrove General Hospital had failed to do - dislodge a 12-sided threepenny bit from a three-year-old Catshill girl's throat. She had accidentally swallowed the coin 15 days earlier and it had stubbornly refused to move. Medics at the General Hospital had not been able to fish it out. But she regurgitaed the coin after becoming excited while on the scary ride during a Sunday school outing to the coast. The unusual incident was reported to The British Medical Journal by Catshill GP Dr R Jack. He himself had been on the trip and had ridden the big dipper, an experience he described as hair-raising.' n THE national bus strike saw pickets take up positions outside the Bromsgrove depot in Birmingham Road. They had been ordered by their union to lie in the road at any attempt to move vehicles out. Of the 142 employed at the garage only eight were non union members. The Austin works sent lorries fitted with seats to ferry its staff from Bromsgrove to Longbridge. TV cameras were outside the County High School, in Stourbridge Road, to film two girls who defied the strike by arriving for lessons on horseback.  more...
