Full marks to those officers at the district and county councils for placing the traffic situation in Evesham town centre under the spotlight, albeit as part of the High Street regeneration project. Given that a similar exercise was undertaken some years ago, resulting in the reversed, single lane flow along Swan Lane, I've watched this piece of business with cautious interest and, lo and behold, it's happened again: a piece of imprudent traffic planning. Oat Street is to be part of a bus route! A road so narrow that cyclists risk serious injury every time they share it with a car, First Midland and the rest. more...
Liz Tucker, county councillor for Pershore (letters, July 12) has exaggerated the emotive issue of heavy lorries "pounding through the town". Our recent traffic surveys carried out in Pershore High Street and on the Wyre Piddle bypass at identical times of the day show that 88 per cent of national and international HGVs now use the A44 whereas only 12 per cent come through Pershore town. Neither is pedestrian safety a problem in Pershore. We have managed to obtain details of the very few injury accidents in High Street and Broad Street over the past four years. According to the planners this work is to be done to improve road safety. Yet these accidents include a boy on a pedal cycle riding on the footpath and a 72-year-old motorist driving through a red light, colliding with a 78-year-old on a pelican crossing. Almost all the accidents involved vehicles being driven by older people and not young people driving too fast, as you may suspect. We doubt whether any of these accidents would have been avoided by the proposed measures including a 20 mph speed limit. We found that the average daytime vehicle speed was less than 20 mph. more...

100 Years Ago July 20, 1907 WE have been waiting more or less impatiently for a good many years to see something done to the petrified kidneys which adorn Evesham High Street. Some little time back the town council decided to cover a portion of them with asphalt, by way of experiment, and a start has been made this week in front of the King's Head Hotel. The experimental patch is to be extended only to the motor caution standard. If this trial turns out as well as we hope it will, we think here will be little difficulty in persuading the burgesses and the council to gradually cover the whole of the pebbles in the same way. If the suggestion made years ago to lay out shrubberies and flower beds down the centre of the street and construct a road on each side is too expensive a matter, we do not see that the council can do better than cover the pebbles with asphalt; they can then at least be kept in something of a sanitary condition. more...
LADIES' GUILD: The chairman welcomed everyone and introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Mrs Christine Gledhills, who spoke about preserves. She told members how her hobby had turned into a business, originally making preserves to raise money for the church, a new variety each month and advertising it in the church magazine. Christine is constantly producing new varieties because of the demand from her customers and her display of preserves was very tempting with unusual ingredients mixed together. The chairman gave the vote of thanks. more...
