Taped insight into shake-up

PUPILS have been recording their thoughts on the changes at their first school before its closure. Children have been using digital audio equipment to tape their responses so future generations can gain an insight into the school review and its effects on Lickhill First School. The recordings will be placed on Lickhill First's website where people with a computer and an internet connection can listen to pupils' thoughts on becoming part of Lickhill Community Primary School, in September. Mrs Calne Edginton-White, headteacher, said: "The children are being interviewed on their experiences while at the school and also the things they are looking forward to. "We're using it to reach out to the community and get our message into the surrounding area." The school, which won an ICT award in 2006, will have its library replaced with a multi-media centre in time for the start of the new term. Three of Lickhill First's schoolchildren received goody bags in June after entering a competition by tyre giant Bridgestone. Their pictures showed how people might travel safely to holiday destinations in the future. Pictured with their winning designs are Aimee Johnson, 7, and Ben Hodgkins, 10.   more...

Former pupil Rachel returns for ceremony

A NATIONAL radio show producer has unveiled a commemorative plaque at her old school before its closure. Rachel Jones, who works on the BBC Radio One's Chris Moyles breakfast show, previously studied at Marlpool First School but returned along with other ex-pupils for the ceremony. Miss Jones helped to plant a spruce tree in the Marlpool Lane school's grounds and unveiled a stone plaque in front of schoolchildren marking 35 years of education at the site, on July 6. She then opened a showcase of performances by former pupils including a cabaret act, a demonstration by Winspers Martial Arts and Ferndale Fliers FC. Jane Bayley, who has been a Marlpool First teacher for seven years, said: "We've had a lot of support from ex-pupils. Rachel used to attend from about 1979.  more...

Playground party lifts mood

THE gates of a 126-year-old first school will close for the final time tomorrow and signal the end of an era. Thousands of pupils have passed through the classrooms of Lea Street First School, Kidderminster, down the years. Its final compliment of 66 youngsters said farewell on Tuesday. Lea Street school was the first in the town to be run by a board of members when it was set up in 1883, during the reign of Queen Victoria. Boys and girls were taught separately until classes were mixed in 1923 and more than 200 pupils were taught each year during the peak intake in the 1990s. Trudy Brooks, secretary, said: "The children had a wonderful time. It was a very emotional day for everyone as we are not reopening in September. They are excited about going to new schools and we are making them look at it as a new adventure as they are going on to something different." Staff were determined to have a good time before bowing out and organised plenty of activities for the youngsters including a day out to Hatton Country World, near Warwick, on Tuesday last week. A playground party, including a bouncy castle and free ice cream, helped lift the pupils' mood, on Tuesday. Year four and five children created their own balloons while all the schoolchildren got into the groove at a school disco later the same day. Richard Taylor'S Weekly Column

July 19, 2007

STATEMENTS in the Commons this week have covered women's priorities, local and regional economic reform in England and Alexander Litvinenko. The last outlined the measures the UK plans to take against Russia for its refusal to allow the extradition of the alleged murderer of Litvinenko. These were widely welcomed across the House but Andrew Mackinlay, MP for Thurrock, one of the more forensic and outspoken Labour members, expressed his concerns that the response will be ineffective and that the House's mood seemed to be anti-Russian. He reminded us that we are enabling people to remain in this country to avoid returning to Russia to face their courts.  more...
