Fired up for dragon day

Pupils at St George's First School brought dragons back to life in a special event held to mark its closure. The dragon themed day took place on July 4, and was held as a celebration for the youngsters.Activities took place in the afternoon and all pupils participated by making dragons and masks as part of the day. Bowing out in style

Clown and circus acts helped brighten the spirits of pupils at Kidderminster's St Oswald's First School, as it celebrated the imminent change to a primary school. The children were taught plate spinning and juggling throughout last Friday afternoon and treated to lunch by the PTA. Preparing to make new friends

Staff and pupils at Lickhill Middle School in Stourport were full of "mixed emotions" as they prepared to walk out the gates for the last time. The school, which has been open for 71 years, closed its doors for good on Friday and the building will be knocked down. There were feelings of excitement for the future ahead and sadness of leaving friends and colleagues behind. The school marked its closure with a final assembly and the youngsters were in high spirits as they prepared for their future and to making new friends. Devoted James tops class chart

A Franche Middle School pupil has been awarded for 100 per cent attendance. James Lawley, 13, of Fairfield Lane, Kidderminster, received a shield in a ceremony held at the school on Monday last week. The teenager who had "no idea" he was going to be rewarded, attended school every day since joining in 2003. Other pupils were handed awards during the event but James was the only one recognised for his attendance.   more...

Signing off on winning note

PUPILS achieving success in sporting and academic fields did their school proud for the final time before it closes its doors. Youngsters bagged several awards and honours during Kidderminster's Comberton Middle School's final term ahead of its closure. The Borrington Road buildings will reopen as part of King Charles I Secondary School in September. Among the highest achievers was Max Sheard, 11, crowned the under 11s Wyre Forest district cross country champion. In Wyre Forest Schools district Athletics championships fellow pupil Joshua Tiffany, 13, became under 13s 100 metres champion and record holder with Michael Mitchell, 11, also breaking the under 11s record after winning the 600m. Adam Fey, 13, also set a new under 13s record in the 80m hurdles event. In the academic field, Stephen Thatcher, 13, entered the National Junior Mathematical Olympiad where he was awarded a certificate of distinction after being placed among the top 25 per cent of entrants, nationally. The music department was also supporting the school's many talented musicians and instrumentalists through their exams while Comberton Middle's Dance Troupe also showcased their talents at Malvern's Voices and Visions event. Surprise gifts for teachers

PARENTS and governors bought gifts for teachers as a thank you for their hard work before the closure of a village school. Stone CE First School's teachers and members of staff all received presents ahead of the building's official closure. The school's governing body and parents collected money to buy various leaving gifts which were handed to the eight staff. Items included garden furniture, money for the commission of a sculpture, a box of crockery, a digital camera and a digital photo printer. Stone's pupils will join nine different schools at the beginning of the new term in September. Top award

A COUNTY group, which is based in Bromsgrove, has been officially recognised as one of 71 UK volunteering groups to receive the prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. The Worcestershire Pre-school Learning Alliance, in Buntsford Park Road, scooped the award at a ceremony hosted by the Lord Lieutenant for Worcestershire, Michael Brinton, at Worcester County Hall. As a recipient of the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the group was presented with a certificate signed by the Queen and a piece of commemorative crystal. The Pre-school Learning Alliance works to support pre-schools across the whole of England. The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service was set up in 2002 to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee and recognises voluntary groups across the UK. You can nominate a volunteering group that is making a difference to your community. Forms for the 2008 award are available from www.queensawardvoluntary.gov.uk or by calling 0845 000 2002. The nomination period runs until September 30.   more...
