The Metal Forest and Beyond by Don Mason

From the Worcester News, first published Wednesday 6th Jun 2007.

Amy, aged fourteen, reluctantly joins her family on a visit to a War Museum and, as she wanders off to find a more interesting way to while away the time, she has no idea of the magical yet increasingly threatening adventure that lies ahead, as she is propelled into a strange world in which the lines between reality and fantasy are continually blurred. Not everything is as it seems.

Beyong the Metal Forest - a vast dumping ground of ancient war machinery behind the Museum, Amy comes across a ten-year-old boy, Little Joe, whose elder brother, Lee, has been captured by the 'Greys' who rule this mystical 'toytown' place under the leadership of six aged and cruel Generals. Feeling she has no choice but to help him, they set off on an incredible journey, led by a very special black cat called William.

Faced with a series of terrifying situations, our young heroes find themselves trying to escape not only from the grey-suited clones but also from horrifying foes such as the Hell Hound, the Potato Headed Scraggle Thing and the destructive bouncing Light Ball. With challenges and obstacles at every turn, their quest seems impossible and their fate uncertain - will they ever find Lee and get home again in one piece?

This book is being reviewed by the children at Pershore High School, Worcestershire.
