100 Years Ago June 29, 1907 It is apparently useless to expect the River Avon Improvement Association to again give evidence that it is alive, and so presumably nothing will be done by anybody to improve the navigation of the Lower Avon, to say nothing of restoring the waterway in the Upper Avon. All the way down below Evesham the river is obstructed by trees which have fallen in, and to remove which no effort is made by anybody. In some places, the available passage is so narrow that steamers can hardly pass through without touching the trees on both sides. Again the locks are in sad need of repair, and it is impossible for any but the strongest to wind up the sluices at Chadbury. The navigation of the Lower Avon is vested in somebody who receives dues, but apparently that somebody does not do anything in return.  more...
