THERE was some good news during an otherwise dreadful week for Severn Valley Railway, as staff were coming to terms with damage along the line in the wake of floods.
The company won the excellence in tourism category in an awards competition run by the Chamber of Commerce Herefordshire and Worcestershire, beating off the challenge of businesses from Herefordshire and the Cotswolds.
The success delighted SVR's marketing manager, John Leach, who said Mother Nature had achieved something even the Luftwaffe had not managed, in stopping trains running along sections of the line.
Taking time out from counting the cost of the damage and planning repair work, which could take several weeks, Mr Leach said of the award: "It's fantastic. We're well pleased with it. The timing couldn't have been better."
He added: "Getting it locally means more than national recognition."
Severn Valley Railway's achievement was announced during the awards presentation event in front of 400 people last Thursday at Worcester Rugby Club.
Hosted by chamber chief executive, Mike Ashton, and former chief executive, Christine Jones, awards were presented in nine categories.
Mr Ashton said: "This evening of awards recognises and rewards those businesses and individuals who have made the most amazing contribution to business life in Herefordshire and Worcester-shire.
"These two counties are full of talent, creativity and business acumen and I'm very proud to be able to serve such well-deserving enterprises."
Explaining why SVR had topped its category, Mr Ashton added: "The winning business, like many good businesses, started off life in a pub by some people who thought it might be a good idea.
"At one time or another, all of us have probably seen it on television and visitors now flock to the attraction in their droves.
"Attention to detail and an army of volunteers made this application stand out. They are totally committed to the highest tourism standards, training and providing facilities for disabled visitors - not easy when most of the buildings date back almost 150 years.
"They have moved from simply a preservation trust to a true tourist destination. Their future intent is clear, with a new visitor and education centre opening in a few weeks time, ready for the summer season."
Other Wyre Forest businesses shortlisted for awards were Stourport's Thomas Vale Construction, in the skills development and business commitment in the community categories, and Kiddies Day Nursery, of Kidderminster, also in the skills development section.
