BARNARDS GREEN II v BROMYARD II

AFTER a week of torrential rain the prospect of playing cricket seemed improbable, but thanks to a dry spell and the efforts of groundsman Roy Mayo, the Green Seconds hosted struggling Bromyard.

With thunderclouds circling it was important that the Green won the toss but as in the previous eight weeks they lost and were asked to bat.

Mark Hooper and James Scullion put on 65 for the first wicket before Scullion was out for a well constructed 25, this brought in Tim Clarke, who, after playing himself in, started to stroke the Bromyard attack to all parts. The partnership had taken the Green on to 130 off 33 overs when Hooper was out for a fine 72.

Jez Clarke joined his namesake and quickly got into his stride with a big six off his legs, Tim Clarke was then bowled by Tompkins for a classy 75.

Paul Yorke joined the Green's late over onslaught and he struck two massive 6s over the trees and into the road before he became Tompkins' fourth victim. Tom Clack continued to rotate the strike until he too perished to Tompkins. It was left to Clarke (43no) and Lewis Hooper (18) to pile on the runs against a demoralised attack as the Green amassed 288-5.

For Bromyard, S Tompkins bowled 18 overs and took 5-77.

In reply, Bromyard were always struggling against opening bowlers Sam Spencer and Tom Clack. who both took an early wicket. After 13 overs Bromyard were in trouble at 28-2 and decided to bat out the rest of the game.

Tom Banks on his debut bowl for the Seconds took the wicket of Purser and Lewis Hooper also took a wicket as the game seemed to be heading for a boring draw. Sam Spencer returned to liven up proceedings, bowling with great pace and control he took two wickets in successive balls, leaving the visitors six wickets down.

The Green managed to get another wicket to gain another bonus point, but had to settle for a winning draw. Bromyard finished on 170-7. D Benbow carried his bat for 56no.

Sam Spencer bowled 18 overs taking 3-30 including eight maidens.

The Green gained 17 points and Bromyard four.

Thanks to matchday sponsors the Red Lion at Powick.
