From the Malvern Gazette, first published Thursday 21st Jun 2007.
JOHN Barr, vicar of Malvern Priory, scored 143 not out at a recent clergy cricket match played at the Worcestershire County Ground at New Road.
The match featured clergy from across the Diocese of Worcester, who were playing against the Diocese of Coventry as part of the Church Times Cup.
The team was established in 1976 and is a mixed-gender team. In the past the team has included the Bishop of Dudley, an Archdeacon and the Dean of Worcester Cathedral.
The match was played over 40 overs and despite the best efforts of the Revd Barr, the Worcester team lost by three runs.
The final score was Worcester Diocese 276 for 3, Coventry Diocese 279 for 5.
Captain David Stanton, Residentiary Canon at the Cathedral, commented: "It has become an established tradition of playing at New Road once a year. It's a real privilege and the team always enjoy it."
John Barr said: "I'm over the moon to have achieved a score of 143, although I was a little disappointed not to have reached the 150 mark."
This is the group stages of the clergy cricket competition and as well as Coventry, Worcester will play the dioceses of Birmingham, Gloucester and Lichfield.
The team would welcome any other members of the clergy who would like to join them.
