Past

From the archives - June 21, 2007

100 Years Ago June 22, 1907 Wednesday's fete, promoted by Miss Hipkins on behalf of Evesham Cottage Hospital, passed off most successfully. The Living Bridge and the concerts by the Scarlet Runners were both much enjoyed, and fortunately the weather was propitious. The Living Bridge was excellently arranged and conducted by Mr George Lowe, and it reflected the greatest credit on all concerned. In some respects, however, it was a pity that it was performed a third time during the evening, and this upset the arrangements for the second concert and the dancing which was to follow. On a future occasion, too, better arrangements for the serving of the tea would be an improvement; there was something lacking in the management of this department on Wednesday.  more...

Harvington - grassroots

Harvington PARISH COUNCIL: At the parish council meeting held last Wednesday evening the recently-appointed area constable WPC Julie de Paris was introduced to council members and a small group of residents present, to all of whom she gave a short but interesting talk about the organisation envisaged for the future. The feeling voiced later was that it all sounds very convincing but can we be sure that we shall see a more substantial police presence in the village when it is needed. Vandalism on the playing field continues and is the cause of great anxiety and disquiet, disappointment too, older people being unable to understand the dissatisfaction felt by young people which appears to lie behind it. There is further disquiet, and anger too, about the building in Leys Road, the circumstances of which are extremely complex, creating an on-going problem for the parish council who are struggling to cope with unkept promises made by the developers and the failure of planners and supervisory bodies to enforce agreed commitments. The results of a further meeting between all parties in the near future is awaited with great interest. Meanwhile, the results of some of the things which have been happening are viewed with great anxiety by the other residents in the area. In the matter of the new village hall, it was reported that chairman Clive Allen accompanied by vice chairman Joyce White had duly consulted a solicitor about any duty the council has as Custodian Trustees of the present hall towards the management committee of the proposed new hall. It was agreed that a small working party consisting of the two councillors already named, together with Cllr Andy Tracey should meet to discuss in detail the expected report from the solicitor in order to summarise it if necessary before passing on to all members of the council on any recommended advice. It is not foreseen that there will be any difficulties arising from this report but the wording needs to be clearly understood.  more...
