CAUGHT IN THE WEB

"Going to the Lebanon, you must be out of your minds!" Exclaimed our friends when we told them we had booked a holiday there from Cyprus in February 2004. Helen Mead

Helen Mead on Monday

I've got you a lovely new ironing board for your birthday, my mother announced the other day. Now I realise that, along with tea towels and oven gloves, ironing boards fall into the category of worst presents for men to give women. Local Walks

Watch out for the squirrels and birds on woodland way

Much of the native woodland which once covered Abberley Hill has been replaced by conifer plantations, and there are lots of sycamores on the hill too. Sycamore is native to Central Europe and is generally believed to have been introduced to Britain c1500, although a carving of a sycamore in Oxford's Christchurch Cathedral dates from 1282. Perhaps a few specimens had already been introduced, or maybe the woodcarver had travelled abroad. Many conservationists dislike sycamore because it is invasive and it supports less wildlife than natives such as oak or ash. But others admit that it is a handsome tree and does support more wildlife than alien conifers.  more...

Memory Lane

100 Years Ago, February 2, 1907

THE widely changeable weather was for a second week the big talking point in Bromsgrove. During that time the town had experienced snow, frost, sleet, rain, sunshine and a thaw plus winds from all four quarters. Ice on the pools at Grafton Manor and Hewell was thick enough to bear and had attracted hundreds of skaters. The bitter chill, which still prevailed, bore out the old proverb that lengthening days strengthened the cold.  more...

50 Years Ago, February 2, 1957

AN attempt was being made to save money by reducing the number of street lights in Cofton which, it was claimed, had the most in any village in England. Among the ideas put forward at the villages' annual lighting meeting was to remove every other one and switch off the remainder from May to September. It was hoped the measures would save on the £1,500 annual lights bill paid by residents.  more...

25 Years Ago, January 29, 1982

A BROMSGROVE man's £110,000 fortune, won on a spot the ball competition just before his sudden death, was put on ice and would not be shared out until his long lost wife had been traced. This was a major blow for his close friend Rene Wilson with whom he had shared a home in Stratford Road for 14 years who had expected to inherit Len Wilkes' money. During that time Rene, from Catshill, had managed all his financial affairs and had even helped fill in the winning competition.  more...
