Carpet deliveries via Saturn!

THE Great Western Railway - GWR - operated the rail system through Kidderminster. In the post- war years people can still remember the drays of carpets, pulled by shire horses, being hauled up Station Hill to the goods yard. However, if deliveries needed the London, Midland & Scottish -LMS - rail network the carpets had to go to their Wolverhampton depot by canal. Road transport eventually replaced rail and Saturn fell into disrepair. In recent years The Saturn Restoration project has restored the boat for exhibition purposes. The Carpet Museum Trust hopes to recreate the picture with the help of British Waterways and Severn Valley Railway. Today, a bale of carpet, marked as in the picture, stands at Severn Valley's Kidderminster Station on a hand cart once used in Brintons' town centre factory.  more...
