30/6/06 - Dropped catch is key moment for seconds

Worcester Nomads I V Coombes Wood

GOOD all-round batting helped Nomads as they were sent in after losing the toss in this Worcestershire Cricket League division two game.

WORCESTER NOMADS I v COOMBES WOOD

Malcolm Jones (38) and Simon Harris (62) gave a solid start, the good work continued by Dannie Rees and Huw Dimond (36). Nomads finished their 50 overs on 247-9.

Coombes Wood started strongly but lost three quick wickets until a partnership of a 100 started to look ominous.

A flurry of wickets left them reeling and they eventually held-out for a losing draw at 208-8. Geoff Taylor, Ben Schiffman, Neil Thompson, Dominic Harris and Darren Lakin bowled well, taking a wicket each.

Coombes Wood v Worcester Nomads II

NOMADS chose to bat and crashed to 20-4, under overcast skies in WCL division two.

Bowlers Banks and Boswell were giving little away and Josh Stafford and Tom Marsh decided that attack was the only solution.

With some superb stroke-play and adventurous hitting, they put on 100 for the fifth wicket, before Marsh (59) fell.

Massey (34) was supported by Stafford, who went on to make a superb 82 before falling to a catch on the deep mid-wicket boundary. The tail failed, leaving Coombs Wood to chase 220 in 58 overs.

A good opening stand put them well on the way before Nomads battled back with three quick wickets.

However, Butterworth was dropped on 22 and went on to make 76, falling just six runs short. Victory was achieved in the 47th over, by five wickets.

Harborne v Nomads III

A second draw in two weeks for these two sides in WCL division seven.

John Prickett put Harborne in on a rough-looking wicket, but Nomads had no-one of real pace to exploit it.

Openers Y Toora and J Dyson put on 65 in 15 overs before a full toss from John Fidoe bowled Toora.

Harborne exploited short boundaries and made 224-6 in 45 overs, with Dyson hitting 80 and R Mangra 52.

Anton Madzarevic bowled accurately to take 2-48 from 12 overs and Bill Beazley 2-44.

In reply, Nomads struggled against the pace in L Yeomans and W Ali, as balls reared disconcertingly from a length.

It did for Alan Mason, Alex Claytor, Jerry Matts and Gerry Kelly to leave Nomads in disarray at 22-4 from six overs.

Respectability was added by Bob Harper (21), Bill Beazley (28) and Anton Madzarevic (24).

Extras, due to the erratic bounce, provided 41 as Nomads reached 151-8 before the overs ran out.
