SIR - D E Margrett's letter (May 2) discussing current problems in the NHS comments that "up to 1979, NHS managers were expected to reflect the spirit of Aneurin Bevan's dream." The NHS is merely an extension on a national level of a medical scheme that existed for many years in Tredegar, South Wales, for the benefit of the others and their families. The moving force in the scheme was Walter Conway - a fact acknowledged in that a street in Tredegar is named after him.   more...
