Tribute to Clapton

From the archive, first published Friday 3rd Mar 2006.

THE music of one of the nation's greatest guitarists is set to come to life as a tribute act takes to the stage.

Eric Clapton has been a international star since the mid 1960s, revolutionising electric guitar playing, with his performances in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.

Winner of an incredible 16 Grammies, he is the only triple inductee into the Rock `n' Roll Hall of Fame - as a member of The Yardbirds, Cream and as a solo artist.

Now tribute act Classic Clapton will be taking to the stage at Tewkesbury's Roses Theatre tonight to play his hits, including Wonderful Tonight and Tears in Heaven.

The tribute band was formed in 1985 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and comprises Mike Hall on lead vocals/guitar, Ray Snowdon (keyboards/backing vocals), drummer Vince Mason and John Forster (bass guitar/backing vocals).

They have released three albums and, in 2001, the group embarked on an extensive tour of UK Theatres, calling the show Classic Clapton.

Tickets for tonight's show, priced £12.50, available from the box office on 01684 295074.
