News

Maybe a simple solution

RE: Disabled access at Evesham Station. Why all the fuss, delay and expense about this? The answer is easy; replace the original barrow crossing (just a few sleepers). Install protective signals ("Caution - cross only when light shows"). If this is still safe practice at Shrub Hill, why not here also? But this is of course far too simple. The HSE would bring its big battalions into play - risk assessments, safety cases etc. So, dear people of Evesham who cannot manage the footbridge, go to Pershore (if you can find a parking space).   more...

Sir Michael: The witness to history

Sixth forms and breadth of choice

SIR - While local education chiefs consider the viability of local schools in Worcester establishing their own sixth forms I hope that they will give serious consideration of some research which has just been published. Government statistics show, quite simply, that those students doing A Levels do better in large sixth forms (usually colleges) than they do in small sixth forms (usually schools). The research stipulates that those studying in a sixth form with less than 50 students achieved an average of 169 A Level points last year. This compares with 277.6 A Level points in those institutions with more than 250 students where an A grade is worth 120 points. The lesson here seems clear - small school sixth forms are unable to provide students with the breadth of choice and the specialist teaching that the A Level syllabus demands.   more...

She had copies of her book on sale, and is in the process of writing her second gardening book, as well as being a regular contributor to the Telegraph newspaper. She gave a talk on Natural Gardening, using nature's own predators rather than chemicals for pest control. Val explained how to encourage and attract bumblebees, beetles, ladybirds to interact with plants and feed on aphids and blackfly etc, rather than resorting to chemicals which kill friendly and helpful insects. Val and her partner have recently moved to Cold Aston and a very neglected garden. They hope to have a mixed garden of flowers, shrubs and vegetables growing together.
