Town pelicans to be upgraded to puffins

From the archive, first published Wednesday 22nd Mar 2006.

WORK has started to upgrade two of Alcester's pelican crossings.

The pedestrian crossings on Kinwarton Road and Swan Street will be improved to puffin crossing status, meaning users will be able to see when it is safe to cross by a signal box near the push button rather than from across the road.

Work will take two to three weeks at Kinwarton Road before operations on the Swan Street site begin, subject to scaffolding on an adjacent building to the crossing being moved.

Warwickshire County Council traffic department spokesman Gafoor Din said: "The crossings are well used and this is why we want to upgrade them.

"The existing ones don't comply with the Disability Discrimination Act and hence we are renewing them.

``They should have a life span of about 15 years."
