AS Cheltenham draws to the end of Gold Cup Week, one of racing's legendary characters is preparing for an exclusive appearance away from the turf.
Sir Peter O'Sullevan will be appearing for one night at the town's Everyman Theatre on Friday, March 31 and giving a unique insight into his lengthy career as a racing commentator and sports journalist.
He has been at the heart of racing for 60 years. For television viewers he was The Voice of Racing, as his distinctive tones formed part of the folk memory of the greatest occasions - Nijinsky's Derby, Red Rum's Grand Nationals, Dawn Run and Desert Orchid's Gold Cups, and countless others.
In 1986 he was elected to the Jockey Club, and his autobiography, Calling the Horses, topped the bestsellers lists in 1989. For his charitable work he was awarded the OBE in 1976 and CBE in 1991. Upon his retirement his extraordinary achievements were recognised when he was knighted.
The evening is being presented in association with Cheltenham Racecourse. Tickets for An Evening With Sir Peter O'Sullevan, which cost between £10 and £16, can be purchased by calling the box office on 01242 572573 or by visiting www.everymantheatre.org.uk.
