Nature inspires poet's new collection

From the archive, first published Thursday 16th Mar 2006.

POEMS inspired by nature and life experiences feature in a new collection from a Cleobury Mortimer poet.

David Walford, of Bristol Place is celebrating the release of his second book of poems, titled Azimuth.

The 57-year-old, who has also had 59 poems published in anthologies, has been writing poetry as a hobby for three years.

Mr Walford draws on his own experiences for his work and said he got a lot of his inspiration while walking in the countryside.

He was delighted with his second book, which has been published by Blackie & Co, adding: "It is a selection of the poems I have written that I consider to be the best. I already have 70 poems towards another book."

Mr Walford, who works for an engineering company in Worcester, wrote short stories before he began writing poetry and said he was "over the moon" when his first poem, titled Christmas Tide Grows Ever Nearer, was published two years ago.

The poet, who also released his first book, Poems of David, in 2004 said: "When you have been writing for a while you will write something down and think that's really good. You only need two lines for an idea. You then need to put the emotion and feeling into words."

The book contains poems which Mr Walford said were easy to read and would appeal to people of all ages.

The former soldier, who served with the Royal Engineers in Northern Ireland between 1969 and 1970, has also written several war poems.

Mr Walford said: "As a soldier, you are in the middle of conflict and, when you come home, people are walking around and they have no idea what has happened to you so I've written a bit about that."
