BLIND youngsters from the South African town of Worcester are to learn the best of British literature, thanks to the city's RNIB New College and Rotarians.
Worcester South Rotary Club contacted the Pionear Blind College in Worcester, Cape Province, after hearing there were Braille books surplus to requirements at the RNIB New College in Whittington Road.
Ian Cutbill, president of Worcester South Rotary Club, said: "Once we found out there were excess, we decided to transport them to Worcester Cape Province."
He estimates that about 3,000 books, mostly English classics, will make their way to Africa, with P&O providing free freight from Tilbury docks, in Essex, and the Rotarians having raised the money to get them down to Essex. Also in the 40ft container will be five pallets of medical equipment, as well as clothing and bedding.
Mr Cutbill added: "They don't have a library in Cape Province and I am sure they will be absolutely delighted to have the books."
