Cubans have no cause to argue

From the archive, first published Monday 13th Mar 2006.

SIR - Congratulations, Marilyn Peachey (If I Ruled The World, Thursday, February 23). Your question "would you be a dictator, or a benevolent leader?" with its underlying premise that the two basic concepts cannot co-exist, has rankled me since the feature began. At last someone has challenged this premise. Marilyn's response was that she would be a benevolent dictator.

The notion of benevolent dictatorship is conceptually sound. He or she may be a rare animal, but the benevolent dictator is not entirely extinct. The under-privileged Cuban, who has witnessed the past five decades of Cuban history, has no cause to argue otherwise.
