SIR - J W Pedley (Letters, January 17), makes a good point with regard to the waste created in the manufacture of wheelie bins as opposed to plastic sacks. However, a wheelie bin can be expected to last at least 15 to 20 years, by which time the average household would have used and discarded about three to four thousand bags. Over time, the environmental costs of making the bags will surely outweigh the costs of the bins.   more...

I WAS pleased to be invited with four other MPs to tea at No.10 by Cherie Blair and to take with me three young people between nine and 15, each with a parent. To select the children, I drew three middle schools out of a hat and then asked the headteachers to choose a representative. Laura Alton, 12, from Sion Hill, David Clarke, 13, from St. John's and David Richardson, 12, from St Anne's were the three selected.   more...

First turf cut for new church

Red Hill Baptist Church leader Rob Giles and youngest member Hannah Brown, aged 17, dig in as 200 people watch the cutting of the first turf for the new church on land off St Peter's Drive, Worcester, on Sunday. Work on the £1.5m building started yesterday and should take about 44 weeks, with the new church open by December. The moment was marked by a specially-written trumpet fanfare. Minister Martin Hodson said: "This is an exciting time for the church. We look forward to the benefits these purpose-built premises will bring to our work and we believe they will be of real benefit to the local community too." The church, now based in Cannon Street, will become St Peter's Baptist Church.   more...
