City centre supermarket gets new look

From the archive, first published Monday 20th Feb 2006.

FIFTEEN jobs have been created with the transformation of a city centre supermarket, which has welcomed the first customers through its doors.

The former Kwik Save in Angel Street, Worcester, has been refurbished as a Somerfield, and was officially opened by Fran Winterbourn, community fund-raiser for Acorns Children's hospice in Bath Road, Worcester, who cut a ceremonial ribbon.

Jon Williams, store manager, said: "The first day went brilliantly. We were really busy."

The supermarket has an in-store bakery, a hot chicken stand, and it sells fresh fruit, meat, fish and flowers.

A town crier spread the news of the opening and was back in town on Saturday.

The 15 jobs created as a result of the conversion, which cost £80,000, have already all been snapped up by eager job-hunters.

The store is open from 8am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
