REPRESENTATIVES from local drama and opera societies took centre stage when the curtain went up on the exciting renovation work at the Palace Theatre.
With just months left until the opening, members of groups such as Studley, Alcester, Redditch and Astwood Bank operatic societies were treated to a tantalising glimpse of what the theatre will finally look like, guided by architect Peter Hall and David Gilmore, from Theatre Search, the historical theatre consultants.
Also present at Thursday's tour was Margaret Simmonds, of Kings Norton, granddaughter of Bertie Crew, the acclaimed architect who designed the original Palace Theatre building in 1913.
Described by Redditch Council Borough Director Chris Smith as the town's "jewel in the crown", people on the tour were given an illuminating insight into the intricate detail which has gone into restoring the Palace.
Just some of the delights theatre-goers can look forward to include a spectacular chandelier in the auditorium and restored seats finished in rich burgundy mohair velour, with gold embroidered numbers.
There will be Olympic-style torch lights around the auditorium and beautifully finished, back lit, stained glass panels which will throw out colour as the house lights dip.
The seating capacity has been increased to allow for 26 more audience members and each chair will have its own supply of low velocity air which will be released slowly and silently.
At the close of the tour, Mr Hall and Mr Gilmore praised council officers who, they said, had worked "unbelievably hard" to make the restoration project work.
Mr Gilmore said: "I have worked with so many local authorities during my career and I can honestly say it has been an absolute joy to work with Redditch Council."
The project is due to be completed in April and the first amateur group to perform there will be Studley Operatic Society, which will be putting on My Fair Lady from May 9-13.
