Dim view taken of gas

From the archive, first published Friday 10th Feb 2006.

THE quality of the gas being supplied to Malvern was on the agenda when Malvern Urban District Council met, the Malvern News reported a century ago.

Dr Dixey, one of the councillors, asked for the gas works to be queried, because there had been many complaints that the gas was "less pure and of lower illuminating power than formerly".

Mr Jephson, another member, said the street lighting along Malvern Wells had been "very much like what it was in the old days of the oil lamps".

Also on the agenda were proposed alterations to Great Malvern railway station to provide a separate access to the"down"platform, much needed because "since the station was constructed traffic had enormously increased".
