Memory Lane

100 Years Ago, January 5, 1907

FOR the first time in its long history the soon-to-take-place annual treat for the poor in Bromsgrove and Stoke was short of cash to purchase the necessary food and gifts. So far donations from the public for the eagerly looked forward to event in the Drill Hall stood at £25. It was reckoned £35 to £40 was needed to cover the cost for the three or four hundred who usually benefited from the treat. It was said the reason for the shortfall was that several wealthy people, who had previously given generously, had either died or moved away during the year.  more...

Echoes from the Past

100 years ago The patients of the Malvern Hospital are never forgotten at Christmas-time. This year the decorations of the various wards were even more elaborate than usual. Mistletoe and holly, flowers and evergreens, brightened the walls, the gas pendants, and, in fact, everything that it was possible to adorn; and there was an atmosphere of cheerfulness about the institution that was positively infectious. The sick and suffering put their troubles on one side, and the Matron and nursing staff were imbued with the Christmas spirit, and did all in their power to ensure the comfort of their charges. Malvern News, December 29, 1906.  more...
