JUNE: An estimated 10,000 people were attracted to Kidderminster Carnival, with the parade led by carnival queen, Page-Leanne Price.Scores of stalls were set up on the carnival field, where entertainment ranged from belly dancers to Flip the Clown.A total of £1,300 was raised through the street collection held on the day, with charities benefiting including Acorns Children's Hospice, Wyre Forest Nightstop and the district's Cancer Research Uk committee. JUNE: Dancer, Grace Hughes, took a major step forward in her career by winning a place at one of the country's top dance schools. Grace, of Stourport and Jimmy Savva, of Bewdley, were both accepted by London Contemporary Dance School.The three-year degree course would include a trip to India for Grace to watch professional performances and take part in workshops.She had opted to study South Asian dancing for a change, having done ballet and contemporary dance for two years. JUNE: Spectators were treated to the sight of rookie rowers splashing about on the river as the annual Clubs and Pubs Regatta was held at Bewdley. More than 100 people lined the banks of the Severn to see 23 crews race along the water. Captain Fantastic and his Merry Men from Cleobury Mortimer Rugby Club won the men's event, beating 10 other crews. Annie's Angels, a group of teachers from St Anne's First School, finished first in the women's race. Front row view: Sam Grinnall, 7, left and Tom Jones, 9, enjoying the regatta.  more...

JUNE: A brave Kidderminster youngster was given a new lease of life as Wyre Forest people helped pay for a special £1,000 bicycle to enable him to get around.Three-year-old Ben Higgins suffered from spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy. He had to undergo two hours of physiotherapy every day to strengthen his legs but his new bike meant he would be able to play outside with his six-year-old sister, Chloe and friends. Among people who had contributed were regulars at the Red Man, Railway Bell, Coopers Arms and Peacock pubs, as well as members of Little Lakes Golf Club. Eight-year-old Dominic Cooke, of Stourport, had a hair-raising experience with a bottle of shampoo, leading to firefighters being called out to help him.He had tried to open the bottle with his mouth while he was in the shower but the lid stuck to his lip.His mum and dad, Jo and Jon, spent an hour trying to prise the plastic lid off before taking him to Kiddermin-ster Hospital where even the nurses failed to dislodge it with ring-cutters.Eventually, the firefighters managed to put an end to his ordeal by getting the lid off with a spanner.Lifting the lid: Dominic Cooke.  more...

MAY: Eleven-year-old Lydia-Alice Humphries got the royal seal of approval for helping nurse sick and injured ferrets back to health.She was invited to Buckingham Palace to receive a British Trust for Conservation Volunteers Green Hero Award from the Duke of Edinburgh.Lydia-Alice, of Kidderminster, had taken more than 100 of the animals into her home over the preceding 18 months after joining the Droitwich Ferret Welfare charity. She had been inspired to help the cause after her own cherished pet, Skinny Minny, was stolen from her home and drowned. MAY: Michelle Walton was hoping she would not end up as shark food as she prepared to take the plunge for charity.The Shuttle/Times & News deputy advertising manager was going to swim with the denizens of the deep at Britain's largest aquarium, in Manchester, raising sponsorship money for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.Her experience of scuba diving in Mexico and Egypt would stand her in good stead for the challenge.She had also met expert white shark cage diver, Andre Hartman, in South Africa, where she first caught the scuba diving bug.Shark challenge: Michelle Walton trains for her fund-raising swim.  more...

MAY: PAMPERED visitors to Kidderminster College looked good and felt good after contributing cash to a worthy cause.Students in the college's Butterfly Room beauty salon offered services ranging from manicures and pedicures to holistic and sports therapies in return for donations to the Breast Cancer Campaign.The budding beauty therapists wore pink accessories in keeping with the salon's awareness week for the disease and decorated the salon.More than £400 had been raised for the charity through the students' efforts.Think pink: Students, Debbie Golding, left and Nadia Katic, raising money for the campaign.  more...

100 Years Ago, December 29, 1906

THE snow, which ensured folk in Bromsgrove and Droitwich enjoyed something of an old fashioned' Christmas, made travel difficult and rendered horses useless on the slippery roads until they had been roughed up. Council staff were kept busy hauling loads of snow, cleared from the paths and highways, to Crown Close. The Messenger observed that 1906 would go down as one of the most Christmassy in living memory', but the cold had not been so severe to make life especially difficult for the poor.  more...

CHRISTMAS in Bromsgrove had been quiet, petrol rationing and six inches of snow combined to make people celebrate at home. However, people had responded to the post early call. In the ten days prior to Christmas Day 386,412 items had been handled in Bromsgrove. On the heaviest day 75,000 items has passed through the office. Hard-working paper deliverers from the Worcester News enjoyed a Christmas treat as a thank you for all their efforts. A 40-strong crowd of people were taken to Worcester's Odeon cinema to watch festive film Deck the Halls, as well as walking away with goody bags. RETIRED caretaker Walter Wilson was a popular Santa at festive events around Kidderminster in the 1960s - especially at the Oxford Street Co-op where he was resident Father Christmas for about three years.Ironically, having brought Yuletide joy to hundreds of youngsters, Mr Wilson died on Christmas Day 1971, aged 73.His son, Stanley, had been making headlines of his own just a month earlier when the Kidderminster Shuttle reported he was back at work as the Co-op's menswear manager after becoming the 46th patient to receive a kidney transplant at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.Now 81, Mr Wilson, who is one of the longest surviving transplantees, uncovered this photograph taken at the town hall in the mid-60s while clearing out the garage at his home in Aster Avenue."I don't know what the event was exactly, but the children must be in their 40s now and I thought it might bring back some memories," he said.Mr Wilson's son, Paul, said his grandfather even played Santa at his junior school - the former Ravenslea House - but he recognised the face behind the beard and gave the game away to his classmates, much to the annoyance of the teachers.  more...
