Private schools

THIS picture from 1938 shows pupils from one of Redditch's private schools run by the Gross sisters. It was supplied by Colin Wheeler, who said he remembered three such schools when he was a child in the 1930s-40s. They generally had a small number of pupils and were held in private houses. It was to these schools that the more affluent of Redditch's residents would send their children. The sisters' school was in Worcester Road, there was also Miss Coate's school in Plymouth Road and Miss Heaphy's school in Evesham Street.  more...

Mini reservoir

THIS picture shows the mini reservoir which used to be in Archer Road. If additional water was needed in the area it was sometimes taken from the reservoir but occasionally people would throw some fish in. When the reservoir was demolished five dustbins full of fish were removed. The man fishing is Gerald Clarke and the woman wearing the pale outfit is Gerald's mother. The picture was taken some time after 1962 and was provided by Dave Tolley.  more...

THIS picture was taken in about 1967 and shows the Alkamatic Club's Christmas children's pantomime party.Hundreds of youngsters and their parents were taken to see The Pied Piper at the Coventry theatre. The picture was supplied by Mr Donoghue, of Lakeside.  more...

Bates Hill

THIS picture, sent in by Dennis Mutton, of Alcester, shows his father, Horace Mutton, parked at the top of Bates Hill in Redditch and was taken about 1924. At that time he was a chauffeur/mechanic to Dr E Fitzpatrick, whose surgery at number six Bates Hill is in the background. The building is also believed to have housed Thomas Hemming, the estate agents. Mr Mutton's duties were to drive the doctor, whose car was a Studebaker, between his home in Bromsgrove Road and the surgery as well as on his rounds. For this part of the job, Mr Mutton had to wear a uniform complete with white peaked cap. He also looked after and dispensed drugs from the dispensary at the back of the building. Number six still remains with only minor alterations to its windows but sadly the magnificent Wesleyan Chapel next door was demolished and an electrical retailer now stands in its place. The photograph also shows Mr Mutton Jnr and his mother looking out of number six's upstairs window.   more...

Palace debut

THERE was a performance at the Palace Theatre in January 1944 and this picture was taken by George Lashbrook, the Redditch Indicator's photographer at the time. Centre stage in the admiral's uniform is Harold Stanley and to his right, Enid Bowen. The picture was supplied by Redditch entertainer Colin Wheeler, pictured second from the left in the front row, who was taking part in his first performance at the Palace at the age of 14.  more...

Return from war

THIS photograph shows Albert Blick (centre) in 1918 on his return from serving in the First World War after being injured and having his leg amputated. Following his return, Albert, who was born and bred in Studley, married Ivy Haynes and took a job at Alkaline Batteries in Union Street. The photograph was provided by Albert's niece, Lynette Wadlow, of Birmingham Road, Redditch, who does not know the identity of the two gentlemen with her uncle in the picture.   more...

The house on the far right, then called East View but later renamed Red Gates and painted white, was where the Downes family lived from 1905 until they emigrated to New Zealand in 1913. THIS photograph shows a scene from a show called Put On by Elsie Sidelle Downing at the Palace Theatre, taken in about 1946/47. It was sent in by Margaret Hadden, of Batchley Road, who said she could remember most of the female members of the cast. Looking from left to right is Sylvia Gould, unknown, Jay Darvill, Thelma Hutton, Enid Bowen, June Palmer and unknown. She thinks the names of the two men are Eddie Crampton and Cliff Field.  more...

THIS photograph shows a performance of musical review Quips and Quavers, presented by Mavis Bennett, at the Palace Theatre on November 28, 1938. Shown centre stage with her arm outstretched is Millicent Phillips aged 14. A year later, she appeared alongside Arthur Askey at the London Palladium in Band Wagon. Three hurt in four-vehicle crash

A MOTHER and her baby were among three people injured in a four-vehicle crash near Malvern. The accident happened on the A449 Worcester to Malvern road, close to the Swan pub at Newland, at noon yesterday. The mother and baby as well as a second adult were taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital, but none of their injuries were believed to be life-threatening. A black Audi A6, white Vauxhall Astra (both above) white and green Seddon and Atkinson lorry and a blue Vauxhall Astra were involved. Police directed slow-moving traffic around the scene until the road was cleared just after 2pm. NATURE lovers are being urged to spare a thought for their feathered garden friends over the festive period. As people celebrate with family and friends, the message is to continue feeding birds, as they need extra help as winter looms. The New Year holiday can often disrupt people's routines, and that includes those that currently take care of the birds that visit their gardens. The colder weather heralds the time when birds are most in need of food. Worcestershire County Council community liaison officer, Hema Kasi-Patel, said: "As we treat ourselves to the rich pickings, it is important not to forget about our local wildlife. Even through the colder months it's common to see robins, blue tits and blackbirds on the hunt for food, we can all help by continuing to put out food and water during the winter."  more...

BROMSGROVE police are appealing for information after a driver asked an 11-year-old girl if she wanted a lift. The driver wound down the passenger window of his car and asked the child several times if he could take her home. The incident happened just before 5pm on Friday, December 15, in a service road off Stratford Road, Bromsgrove.  more...
