THIS shows Mr Ledbury with his son, Douglas, outside their garage in Redditch town centre in about 1925. The location of the business was opposite the Palace Theatre. It later became Huntleys undertakers but is now the location of the steps leading to the town hall. The picture was supplied by Terry Burton, of Riverside, Studley.  more...

THIS was taken at Batchley First School in 1965. Carnival ox roast

HIS shows crowds gathering to place auction bids for the first slice of meat from the annual ox roast at Redditch Carnival. It was taken in about 1935 on a green area which was formerly at the top of Easemore Road. Sidney Neason can be seen auctioning the meat and holding the plate is Joe Walker, who lived at Hunt End.  more...

Mystery slippers

VERY few details are known about this photograph, which was taken in Redditch in the late 1930s or early 40s. It was supplied by Mrs L Wadlow, of Birmingham Road, whose grandfather William Haynes, also formerly of Birmingham Road, can be seen on the right of the bench. One interesting aspect of the photograph is that many of the men are wearing slippers, despite being outside and dressed in suits.Mrs Wadlow said her grandfather had suffered a bout of rheumatic fever which made him quite ill. This may account for the slippers.  more...

Terry Springs factory

THIS photograph was taken at Terry Springs factory in about 1949/50 and appeared in a national publication called The Motor in August 1951. The lady is Bridie O'Sullivan, who worked in the factory for many years. Mrs O'Sullivan travelled over from Tralee in southern Ireland and was found a job in the canteen of Terry Springs, where she worked for 18 months before moving on to become a machinest. Mrs O'Sullivan left the factory to have her son Frederick. The photograph was supplied by daughter-in-law Jennifer O'Sullivan.  more...

Colin Stowe, 1950

THIS is Redditch dancer and showman Colin Stowe in October 1950. The picture was supplied by local entertainer Colin Wheeler, who shared the stage with Stowe on a number of occasions. Before his association with the Redditch Stage Club, Stowe received most of his early training under the famous Madame Leminski. The picture was taken at the time he was appearing in Zip Goes a Million with the George Carden Dancers at the London Palladium. The star of the show was George Formby. When Formby had a heart attack, another Midlander, Reg "Confidentially"Dixon, took over the lead and became a star overnight. Sadly, Stowe's young life was cut short in tragic circumstances.  more...

THIS was Barbara Baldwin, of Batchley, enjoying successes in town beauty pageants in the 1970s.The first was in 1974, when she was named Miss Redditch in an event sponsored by the town branch of the Royal British Legion and the second was two or three years later when she was crowned Miss South Redditch at South Redditch Social Club, receiving a large bottle of bubbly.   more...

THIS was one of Redditch's best tap dancers of the 1940s. Taken in January 1949, it shows local entertainer Colin Wheeler's former stage dancing partner Betty Berry. She appeared in Christmas Cocktail and was regarded as one of the best half dozen professional tap dancers Redditch has ever produced.  more...

100 Years Ago, December 15, 1906

GEORGE Davenport, a labourer from Catshill, appeared at Bromsgrove Police Court charged with not keeping to his side of the road while driving a horse and cart laden with manure at the Whetty. The court heard that as a motor vehicle approached him, he did not pull over to the left until the last minute nearly causing an accident. He was fined 5/- (25p) with 5/6 (27.5p) costs.  more...

President Betty Wolsey welcomed a full attendance to the AGM. After singing Jerusalem, a two minute silence was observed in memory of member Betty Groves, who died in October. The 75th anniversary lunch, prepared by our ladies, was well attended and enjoyed by 40 people - including guests from other WI groups and some of our former retired members. The meal was followed by entertainment from Morning Dew - a duo who, with songs and music, aired a history of British songs. Our committee is to continue with the present officers, as there were no new candidates put forward. Tea and anniversary cakes were served, while items which are to be sent to Primrose Hospice shop were put on display.  more...
