Europe and the US dimension

SIR - I am surprised that such an avid Europhile as Mr Margrett is unaware that the European Court of Justice is not only the final arbiter of EU law, but is also responsible for interpreting and applying EU treaties one of which is the European Convention of Human Rights. This was updated in 1998 and included in English Law and is one of the reasons our laws are more favourable to criminals than victims.  more...

Anger as bosses given big pay rise

SIR - I wonder how many people must have felt a surge of anger as they read the headlines Pay rise for NHS Bosses' in Tuesday's paper. It might be a national decision, but in the face of all the job losses and cutback of services, would they not have earned tremendous respect if they had declined to accept the rise? How can they justify accepting the increase and feel comfortable with themselves? They already earn a pretty substantial salary in comparison with the hard working staff on the wards.  more...

Memory Lane

100 Years Ago, November 10, 1906

AT a meeting of Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Hospital Committee there was a specially convened meeting on the requirement of Messrs Stockdale, Newbould and Key. As representatives of Bromsgrove Rural District Council they asked the group to consider providing additional accommodation for scarlet fever cases. Mr Stockdale said no more cases should be sent to hospital as it was now full. It was said further accommodation should be provided by purchase of tents and erecting them at Hill Top. He said a large tent would cost no more than £20 and another £50 for fittings.  more...

50 Years Ago, November 10, 1956

AN aerial photo in the Messenger showed Stoney Hill to Churchfields. The piece said the roads of the Stoney Hill area stood out sharply, as did the new cul-de-sac into building land being cut from North Road. The Messenger said this was Bromsgrove's problem district and asked when roads would be widened and provided with a footpath and how it would be done at East Road with its steep hill between the road and houses. At the top of the photo there was a "big bite" made by the car park out of the old recreation ground and the stretch of parkland and playing fields from Sanders Park, to Crown Close, the Rec and High School and Stourbridge Road playing fields.  more...

25 Years Ago, November 6, 1981

MONTHS of wrangling over a clubhouse site ended with the homeless Bromsgrove British Legion submitting a complaint to the Ombudsman against the district council. The battle began when the council offered the Legion land off Factory Lane for a £60,000 clubhouse. But it was later discovered that the land had serious defects and to build on it would be too expensive and impractical. The Royal British Legion accused the district council of keeping quiet about investigations which revealed pollution and buried foundations. It also claimed that council debates were held in secret, requests for meetings were refused and time was wasted - all denied by the council. The local authority had repeatedly denied withholding vital information and time wasting. Cllr Margaret Taylor, chairman of the district council, had said she wanted to dispel any idea that it had not been negotiating in good faith.  more...
