A golden opportunity for Chrissies was lost

SIR - Having returned from living in Spain a few months ago, I was totally bemused to read that the Christopher Whitehead/Tesco proposal had not materialised. Before leaving Spain had I read that Tesco had offered to build a brand new hi-tech school equipped to the highest standards with the most modern teaching aids and recreational facilities on a new site, in exchange for the old school site and at absolutely no cost to the city ratepayers.  more...

Police are picking on the motorists

Firms wasting so much electricity

SIR - A couple of weeks ago, national "switch it off" week was staged. On October 17, the Worcester News printed a small sample of posters submitted by children to promote it. Some of the worst culprits are business firms. A company with a car park in Worcester has its lights automically switched on at dusk - last week 6.20pm. By this time, the staff cars have usually gone home, but the lights stay on until they automatically switch off at 9.30pm. The lights came on and go off again in the morning, usually before the first cars arrive and on Saturday and Sundays when there are no cars.  more...

City firefighter rescues lost swan

A BRAVE bird was stopped in its tracks by one of Worcester's retained firefighters. Keith Sheppard, a technician at Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service's Transport and Stores on Hylton Road, rescued a swan as it wandered away from the river. The 49-year-old said he was coming off a break when he saw the swan walking up the side of the Worcester News building and up the alleyway towards Henwick Road. "We phoned Swan Rescue but they said it would be three hours before they could get anyone there, and if it was OK I could pick it up," he said. "I picked it up by its neck. Copies can be better than the real thing

WE have quite a few tribute' bands at both the Hall at the Swan. I was very sniffy about tribute bands for a long time and wouldn't book them. I used to say loudly to anyone who would listen, the real thing or nothing. There's no artistic merit in just copying someone else'. Then I booked one at the Hall as an experiment, an Eagles tribute called Talon. They sold out, got a standing ovation from the audience, and to be fair, were absolutely brilliant. So what do I know? I have been booking tribute bands ever since, and there is a big demand for them. My personal favourites are probably the Counterfeit Stones who I think are better than the originals ever were, and Nearly Dan - I am a huge Steely Dan fan and they come very close to the real thing!  more...
