AT Bromsgrove Petty Sessions, George Butler, from Sidemoor, appeared to answer a charge of being drunk in Cattle Market Street. Sergeant Mead proved that the defendant was drunk and incapable. The defendant said he had been unwell and had had a drop of beer. Sgt Mead said it was Butler's 54th appearance for drunkenness. He was fined 5s and 4s costs.  more...

IT was jubilee year for the Bromsgrove Association of the National Union of Teachers, a branch that was formed for the town and district in February 1881. At the annual dinner of the association, the national president was entertained as the principal guest. It was the first time the leader had been to Bromsgrove. This year's president was Edwards Britton, headmaster of a secondary modern school in Warlingham, Surrey.  more...

BROMSGROVE shoppers were split between the hustle and bustle of a traffic filled High Street and the peaceful convenience of pedestrianisation. But only a handful of locals were happy with the present system of opening the street to service vehicles only, according to a Messenger survey. Half of those who replied to the survey called for a completely traffic free High Street with provision for the disabled. While 33 per cent wanted it open to traffic again. Only 17 per cent were in favour of the present system of access for service vehicles at restricted times - there posed a dilemma for Bromsgrove District Council, which was preparing to spend £190,000 on a High Street facelift.  more...

"The sunny summer created ideal growing conditions," said auctioneer Nick Champion, "and I should think we have had one of our best ever entries, although the sheer volume kept the prices down."
