With its frilly leaves and colourful heart, the ornamental cabbage is a great focal point in winter baskets, planted alongside variegated ivies, heather and violas. Ornamental cabbages come in mauve, pink or cream and can last all winter if you're lucky and provide the right growing conditions. Take them out when they start to run to seed in early spring, when it's time to plant spring bedding. They need fairly well-drained soil or containers, in sun or light shade.  more...
