From the Archives - November 16, 2006

100 Years Ago November 17, 1906 The Horsebridge Hill ghost has appeared again. Here is the story as it was told to us. On Sunday evening, at about a quarter to ten, two Evesham men were walking home from Badsey; near the brook at the bottom of the hill a "female form" appeared and accosted one of them, and the other very politely walked on, while the one accosted stopped. The female touched him on the shoulder as said "You are Claude," He replied: "I'm not; I'm -- from Evesham." The female asserted: "You are Claude; you murdered me 75 years ago," and then disappeared. The man shouted, and as soon as possible caught up with his companion, who found he was "trembling like a leaf." It seemed a pity to make inquiries which might disturb the beautiful symmetry of the story, so we give it as it stands.  more...

From the Archives - November 23, 2006

100 Years Ago November 24, 1906 The Vicar of Evesham and his helpers are to be heartily congratulated on having, as a result of the success attending the All Saints' Festival, completely extinguished the debt upon the New Parish Hall. There are very few small towns in the country where money can be more readily found for worthy objects than Evesham, and the raising of over £1,000 in such a short space for the parish hall is a proof of this. We hope that it will now be found possible to turn attention to the re-hanging of the bells in the Tower. It is some considerable time since this question was first mooted, and it was then stated that nothing further could be undertaken until the debt on the Parish Hall had been wiped off.  more...

A pining parakeet is calling for her mate after he escaped from a Malvern pet store. The male parakeet escaped from Pet World in Barnards Green and was later spotted in a garden in Poolbrook. Staff have been trying to catch the elusive bird since he escaped, but as soon as they get close he takes off. They even took his female partner out as bait, but he wasn't fooled. He said the bird would be fine in the wild but people should not try to catch him, as he has a very sharp bill.   more...

Harvington - grassroots

ART Group : The exhibition held in the village hall last Saturday drew many admiring comments and congratulations from the members of the public who came to view the work on show. It was felt the standard was exceptionally high and bidding for the painting kindly donated by club member Gillian Anderson was most gratifying. Attendance during the morning service was very pleasing, though less so in the afternoon, but chairman Alan Davies hopes the impression given to those who came will prompt even more support for a future occasion. The event was staged in order to swell the group's funds, but all the profits from the raffle will be given to the village hall appeal fund. Alan would like his thanks to be given to all who helped to make the effort a success.  more...
