100 Years Ago, November 24, 1906

SCARLET fever and whooping cough were laying low dozens of children living in rural areas of Bromsgrove, the medical officer Dr Coaker reported. At Aston Fields there were 14 cases of the fever, ten of which had been removed to the Hill Top isolation hospital, which was said to be at bursting point.' The whooping cough epidemic was so bad at Bentley the village school had been closed for three weeks.  more...

50 Years Ago, November 24, 1956

THE trouble in the Middle East had prompted the government to issue petrol rationing coupons. It meant private motorists could travel no more than 800 miles in four months unless they had a good reason. Commuters travelling daily from Bromsgrove to Birmingham by private car would be seriously affected. On Thursday, the first day the coupons were issued, there were long queues outside Bromsgrove Post Office all day. A total of 527 books of the six denominations were issued.  more...
