SIR - Oh, the irony of your front page report of Thursday, October 27. You criticise the BBC for revealing that city centre cameras will be out of action for up to three weeks. Brilliant, what a fantastic piece of journalism. By running this story you have done exactly what you are criticising the BBC for doing. For the benefit of the criminal element that may have missed the original report on Tony Fisher's Breakfast programme on BBC Hereford & Worcester - perhaps they were enjoying a lie-in after their previous night of criminal activity - you have heralded rather loudly on your front page that, guess what, the city centre CCTV cameras will be out of action for a few weeks! Anybody who missed the original radio report and wasn't aware at this temporary dip in security certainly knows about it now. Well done, Worcester News. Give yourself a huge collective pat on the back. The very thing that you were criticising, you've just done yourself. more...

FROM Thomas Becket to Latimer and Ridley, the legacy of England's bishops form a rich vein of dissent that courses through the living body of the Church. 100 Years Ago October 27, 1906 It was not until this week that we read the inscription that has been placed on the Whale's Jawbone in the Workman Gardens, Evesham. It is as follows: "Jaw bones of a whale captured by the ship Andrew Marvel in the year 1820, and presented by Mr Stanton, formerly of Evesham (who assisted in the capture) to the late Dr Beale Cooper, in whose grounds near here it stood for upwards of eighty years. Presented in the year 1905 to the Borough by Mrs Frances Edwards, Dr Cooper's granddaughter" . All the rest of the week we have been wondering whether the "it" refers to the whale or to the ship. more...
100 Years Ago November 3, 1906 The Evesham water supply has not been turned off during the afternoon or night since last Saturday week, and the result is that the consumption has gone up by about 39,000 gallons a day. Though there is some increase in the yield from the springs, it is still less than the consumption by 18,000 gallons a day, but it is hoped that the yield will shortly improve considerably, and if the expected happens it should not be necessary to cut off the supply again. A hard frost may cause the water to be turned off, for owing to burst pipes, and the fact that some people leave their taps running when the temperature gets below freezing point, the winter consumption is occasionally great than that of the summer. more...
