Memory Lane

Echoes from the Past

100 years ago Malvern Free Churchmen and the public generally will look forward to the visit on Tuesday next to Holly Mount Church of the Rev Silvester Horne. Mr Horne's wonderful gift of oratory and great activity in his support of all philanthropic, social and religious movements have won for him a world-wide fame. He has many interests, but his energies are chiefly concentrated at Whitefields, London, where he inaugurated and carries on an Institutional Church amongst a dense population. Malvern News, November 10, 1906 THE clerk read the following letter from Lord Biddulph: "I have had complaints from my tenants, whose land is situated on the banks of the Leadon, respecting the pollution of the water, caused by sewage, which is allowed to enter it. It is represented to me that this is very bad indeed and at all times amounts to a most serious nuisance." Ledbury Free Press, November 13, 1906 50 years ago The first meeting of the newly-formed South Midlands section of the British Institution of Radio Engineers was held on Thursday in the Winter Gardens restaurant. Dr Tomlinson, of the General Electric Company's Research Laboratories, presented a paper based on The Principles of the Light Amplifier and its applications, in which he dealt with some of the recent uses of solid-state electro-optical devices as well as the light amplifier itself. Malvern Gazette, November 9, 1956 BEFORE his sermon at Ledbury Parish Church's Remembrance Day service on Sunday, the Rector announced that the Christmas Day collection would go to the Hungarian Relief Fund. The plight of Hungarian refugees cannot fail to appeal to the sympathy of British people, who place freedom among their most cherished possessions. Ledbury Reporter, November 16, 1956 25 years ago A new refuse collection scheme is to be used as a lever to improve safety on the Worcester Road approach to Malvern at the bottom of the Link. Hereford-Worcester county council plans to transfer its household skip collection facilities from the Belmont Road tip to the Alexandra Road site at Malvern Link. And when Malvern Hills central area planning subcommittee received details of the scheme on Monday, members seized the opportunity to criticise traffic conditions in Worcester Road.
