SIR - It has been claimed that sterling couldn't survive on its own and that we must join the euro, but this has been shown to be false as world governments hold more and more of their monetary reserves in sterling. Now, the claim that over half our export trade is with the EU has shown to be equally as untrue. The latest government statistic shows that in spite of the fact that eight more countries joined the EU in May 2004 our overseas export earnings from the EU continue to go down and now we do far more trade with the rest of the world than we did with the EU when we first joined that undemocratic body.  more...
