City’s Deansway is not a misnomer

SIR - Regarding the letter headlined High jinks in the Old Palace cellars', (Worcester News, Saturday, October 14)John Hinton suggests that the Old Palace only became the deanery in the 1930s. It was actually bought by the Dean and Chapter as the new Deanery in 1843 to replace the old deanery to the south of the Cathedral (where the Guesten Hall was). Although it was impractical as a home, and several later deans did not like it, it remained the deanery until 1941. Therefore Deansway' is not a misnomer, as the Old Palace was the deanery when the road was constructed.  more...
