Letters

The true voice of all county’s pensioners

SIR - The attitudes of self-elected representatives who claim to speak on behalf of older people throughout the UK is nothing but a national disgrace. A large number of them sit on quango-style committees and claim to represent older people by understanding their needs and so on. These same people sit back and ignore the plight of citizens of this country they claim to represent. They should all hang their heads in shame.  more...

So much for all Blair's fine words

SIR - In reply to D E Margrett's recent letter perhaps we will only be in agreement on the EU when we get the promised preferendum from Tony Blair. In 1983 Mr Blair is reported to have said: "We'll negotiate a withdrawal from the EEC which has drained our natural resources and destroyed jobs."  more...

Heads are made of flesh and blood

SIR - I am amazed at people complaining to the council about falling pears. Anyone would think they had to walk five miles round the tree. The human body, including the head is made of flesh and blood, not concrete. If you wish to complain to the council save your ammunition for wheelie bins. Pay-as-you-throw-away rubbish would be greatest outrage since the poll tox.  more...

Where have all the English MP's gone?

SIR - We have a Scottish Prime Minister representing a north of England constituency. We have the prospect of his successor being one of two Scots, both of whom live in, and represent, Scottish constituencies. Is there no English Labour MP capable of acting at the highest level of Government, or are such posts reserved for Scots? And if they are, what is the point of the Scottish Assembly?  more...

Open utilities to real competition

SIR - With the price of electricity and gas going up again, I think it's about time that all the utilities were opened up to proper competition.  more...

I don’t understand

SIR - Lots of funding from our lottery goes to different causes, but I fail to understand in some cases. To me it goes to the wrong causes and I feel it is a waste. This money would be better spent on the NHS which is desperately in need of help. So why shouldn't the NHS get a share of the lottery? Could someone in authority please enlighten me and explain?  more...

Forgotten heroes of the Suez crisis

Death by a thousand cuts

WE are now only 17 months away from the end of Government subsidy for the Post Office network. No decision has been made on the future of the subsidy or, it appears, the Post Office network itself. Painfully loud

ANOTHER splendid production at the Malvern Theatres, this time Me and My Girl. How sad it is then that the quality of this production is let down by music amplification being far too loud, at times painfully so.  more...

Unhelpful attitude

I FIND Ledbury Town Council's response declining the chance to come up with a new name for Leadon Bank Residential Home more than disappointing. The response is not only discourteous to Shaw Healthcare, it shows also a lack of ability by councillors to have the vision to see the future of this facility, which will become an integrated community amenity. I give as an example the day centre.  more...

Lifestyle

Turn up the volume

Forget about that sleek and slender silhouette, at the moment it's all about volume. Elizabeth Cocozza, Eve magazine fashion director, says: "The new silhouette is a change from the hippy chic look that lasted quite a few seasons." But wallflowers take note: voluminous additions to your wardrobe are all about big, bold lines and puffed-up shapes. Pump up the volume and breathe some life into even the most lacklustre winter wardrobe   more...
