Letters

God and mammon

SIR - It is obvious, as your leader says (September 29) that the influence of the Church has declined. People today make a god of cars, shopping, beer, football, drugs or sex.  more...

Expect a thrashing if you watch the pig die

SIR - When I was a little lad, long before beginning school, I had witnessed many a beast being slaughtered in the manner described by George Cowley (Letters, October 8). It was an everyday occurrence at a slaughterhouse in Wyld's Lane, Worcester, and the doors were invariably open. Endless repetition of same nonsense

SIR - L J Middleton (Letters, September 23) repeats the nonsense that the EU is not democratic, asserting that "the greatest threat to the nations of Europe is a body of unelected officials". Endless repetition of this same nonsense by different writers will not make it true. EU laws are determined by co-decision between the democratically-elected Council of Ministers and the democratically-elected European Parliament. The unelected commission has no votes.  more...

More about pears

SIR - This may seem a radical idea, but why was it not possible for someone to have picked those highly dangerous pears in Cripplegate Park - or would that perhaps have broken some health and safety rule regarding heights?  more...

No change there

Opinion

Stating the obvious is no answer

IF someone within earshot of comedy legend Basil Fawlty said that we were living in a computer age then he would undoubtedly bark back that this was stating the obvious - or words to that effect.
